FAQ

So, what happens if tokens are sent to the wrong blockchain?

If, by accident, tokens end up in the wrong blockchain, in the worst cases, they are gone for good. Never to be recovered. However (depending on the circumstances), there are cases where tokens sent to the wrong network can be recovered but not without a tremendous amount of work and hassle. Here are 3 different conditions of mismatched token-network transactions and their known solutions:

CASE 1: Sending tokens to the wrong blockchain network on a custodial wallet or crypto exchange:

  • There is no general solution for such a dilemma.

  • The sender will have to contact the crypto exchange’s customer service.

  • However, most exchanges cannot help customers recover misplaced funds in this case. CASE

Case 2: Sending tokens to the wrong blockchain network on a non-custodial wallet that supports multiple token standards including the correct one for the purpose of the transaction:

  • This is the best-case scenario.

  • In this case, you can recover your assets, but not without a lot of sweat.

  • The sent tokens will appear on the destination’s wallet but as a morphed version. » For instance, ETH sent to a BSC chain, reflects as a Binance coin pegged to ether:

  • To recover them, you’ll have to transfer the funds back to the sender’s address and convert them to ETH.

Case 3: Transferring tokens to the wrong network on a non-custodial wallet that doesn't support the correct token standard for the sent token:

  • Here you can also recover your tokens, but the process is even more laborious than in case 2.

  • You’ll have to use the target wallet’s private keys to import it to a MetaMask or any other wallet that supports multiple standards (the dedicated town’s standard included), recover the token on the introduced wallet, then repeat the steps in case 2.

  • Good luck getting them to give you the private keys for this type of recovery. Truly a piece of work!
